Help with PhotoSpots.
Answers to common setup, sync, privacy, and workflow questions.
Is PhotoSpots a native app?
Yes. PhotoSpots is built from the ground up as a native iOS app using SwiftUI and modern system frameworks. This ensures lightning-fast performance, smooth animations, fluid haptic feedback, and deep integration with system features like iCloud, Widgets, and Apple Maps.
Where is my PhotoSpots data stored?
Your spots, lists, notes, and attached photos are stored on your device. If iCloud sync is enabled, they also sync privately through your iCloud account using Apple CloudKit. This data is yours alone. The developer does not have access to your private iCloud data.
Does PhotoSpots sell or track location data?
No. PhotoSpots does not sell location data, does not use third-party analytics SDKs, and does not track you across apps or websites.
Does PhotoSpots work without an internet connection?
Yes. PhotoSpots is designed to be fully functional offline. All your data lives on your device, and the app integrates with Apple Maps offline maps. By downloading offline maps in the Apple Maps app for your scouting areas, you can browse your library, view your location, and plan your shoots even in remote areas without cellular service.
How do I organize spots?
Create lists for trips, projects, subjects, or neighborhoods using colors and emojis. You can also use tags, priority, scouted status, photographed status, and archive state to keep your library tidy. Filter by any of these either in list or map view to find exactly what you need.
What is the solar compass?
The solar compass shows precise sunrise, sunset, golden hour, and blue hour times for any spot. You can visualize the sun's path on an interactive map, scrub through year, day, and time, and preview exactly when the light will be perfect for your shoot.
Can I use the Framelines camera to preview my shot?
Yes. Open the Framelines camera from any saved spot to preview real-world framing with your gear. Simulate different focal lengths, switch aspect ratios, and capture reference photos with full metadata including camera, lens, crop, time, and location.
How do I save spots quickly?
Use the home screen widget to pin a spot in seconds without opening the app. You can update the spot's details and photos later when you have more time.
Can I import and export my spots?
Yes. PhotoSpots supports CSV and GPX import and export formats, so you can back up your spot library, move data between devices, or integrate with other tools.
What are the premium features?
The free version is fully functional. Premium is purely cosmetic and is only to support development. It unlocks alternate app icons, custom background themes for lists and library, and global themes for a personalized workspace.
Does iCloud sync work across devices?
iCloud sync is currently available on iPhone. iPad and Mac versions are not yet available, but your iPhone data will be ready to sync when those apps launch.
Why does the app ask for location permission?
Location permission shows your current position on the map, calculates distances to saved spots, and enables location-based features like the home screen widget. Your live location is never sold, shared, or used for analytics.
Why does the app ask for photo library permission?
PhotoSpots accesses your photo library only when you choose to attach reference photos to a spot. Attached photos are stored locally and, if iCloud sync is enabled, in your private iCloud data—never on external servers.
Why does the app ask for notification permission?
PhotoSpots uses notifications to alert you only when a spot is successfully saved from the widgets. Notifications are local only and the developer can't see who or when you save your spots.
